Description:

From the jacket of the Heinemann edition, 1961

This is the story of a man who lost his faith. In 1943, a priest, Ardito Piccardi, was shot by the Germans – a voluntary sacrifice to save the lives of several young insurgents. Seven years later the narrator of this story learns that Piccardi is still alive.
The priest’s survival and search for his lost God is traced from letters, friend’s second-hand accounts and the priest’s own diaries. In a concentration camp Arditi had been able to transfer his faith to a young man who was ‘living in Satan’; in the wild forests on the border of Poland he helped a group if escapees through the fearful last days of the war.
The priest who had adored God now submitted to life’s worldliness. In Montparnasse and Mexico Ardito is a ‘naked soul’, a godless man who became inordinately sensitive to the influences of spirituality and Satanity. He encounters various manifestations of the devil, including the insidious Mr. Page, the immaculate, bespectacled Parisian – the priest tempter. Finally, God is thrust back into Arditi’s life while he is defending a young Mexican from a lynching mob.
The White Stone is a moving and thrilling story of a hunt for a lost faith as Good and Evil, Hope and Despair, vie with each other for the soul of the unhappy priest. It is a surprising and brilliant sequel to Carlo Coccioli’s novel, Heaven and Earth, which was published by Heinemann in 1953.
