Description:

From the jacket of the Shorecrest edition

Fabrizio Lupo, a young Italian painter, and Laurent Rigault, a French sculptor, are outlawed both by the Church and by the society because of their homosexual love. Meeting in Paris, where Fabrizio has come for an exhibition of his work, they are immediately aware of a magnetic attraction for each other and are swept together into a turbulent affair, which continues after Fabrizio returns to Italy and pursues Laurent with passionate letters.
To Fabrizio and Laurent their love is a deep, lasting and beautiful as any heterosexual love, but, unable to conform to the patterns of conventional society, they are tortured by a profound sense of shame and guilt, and driven to the limits of anxiety and despair. Their brief, tempestuous affair is not only affected by the persecutions of the outside world, but also suffers acutely from the tensions caused by the differences in their temperaments and backgrounds. For Fabrizio, his affair is the fulfilment of his search for the ideal love and is destroyed by Laurent’s betrayal of his love and by his frivolous infidelities. The intensity of Fabrizio’s emotions finds an outlet in an impassioned, lyrical and absorbing journal-novel which expresses his love in allegorical terms.
Coccioli is a writer of rare literary quality and integrity, and the eloquence of this book reveals the deep human awareness of the author, who rank among the major novelists writing today. The sensitivity and poignancy of the story leave the reader profoundly moved and with a strong feeling that he now sees the world with very different eyes than before.
